Arslanian, Silva

Silva Arslanian, M.D., is Professor of Pediatrics and Clinical and Translational Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine. She is a pediatric endocrinologist and holds the Richard L. Day Endowed Chair in Pediatrics, at the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. She is the Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded Pediatric Clinical and Translational Research Center at the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and the Scientific Director of the Center for Pediatric Research in Obesity and Metabolism.

Dr. Arslanian obtained her medical degree from the American University of Beirut and completed her pediatric residency training at the same institution. She completed her fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes Mellitus at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, USA.

Dr. Arslanian’s research focus is on insulin sensitivity and beta cell function during childhood growth and development in health and disease (obesity, pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome, metabolic syndrome), and racial differences.  She is funded by the National Institutes of Health, Research Foundations and Pharmaceutical Companies and has over 200 publications. She is the recipient of several prestigious awards for her seminal work in pediatric type 2 diabetes.

Simon Pearce

Pearce, Simon

Professor of Endocrinology, Newcastle University; and Honorary Consultant Physician, Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. 

Simon Pearce qualified in Medicine MB,BS 1st class honours from Newcastle University. Following internal medicine training, he undertook postgraduate training in endocrinology at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith, London (MD degree awarded with distinction); Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Boston, USA; and latterly as a Wellcome Trust Advanced fellow in Newcastle, UK. He was appointed as Senior Lecturer in Endocrinology in 2001 at Newcastle University, and promoted to Full Professor in 2007, affiliated to the Institute of Genetic Medicine. He serves as current Programme Secretary for the Society for Endocrinology, and on the editorial boards of J. Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, European Thyroid Journal and BMC Thyroid Research. The main themes of his research programme are in regenerative medicine approaches to adrenal failure, novel therapies for Graves’ disease and the long-term management of thyroid diseases. He has published more than 150 papers, with a current H-index of 45.

Christ Crain, Mirjam

Mirjam Christ-Crain is full Professor of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the University of Basel and the University Hospital of Basel, Switzerland.  She studied medicine in Basel and Vienna and did her MD in the year 2000 at the University of Basel and her PhD 2007 at the University of London followed by her habilitation at the University of Basel in 2007. From 2009 to 2015 she had a research professorship of the Swiss National Science Foundation. Her main research interest is on the posterior pituitary, i.e. fluid disorders with a special focus on diabetes insipidus and hyponatremia. She authored and co-authored more than 200 publications and received several awards for her research.

Since 2013 she is Deputy Chief at the Clinic for Endocrinology, University Hospital Basel and since 2014 she is Head of the Department of Clinical Research at the University of Basel.

He has established a novel clinical entity named “Anti-PIT-1 antibody syndrome”, a specific form of hypophysitis and elucidated the underlying mechanisms (JCI 2011, JCEM 2014, Sci Rep 2017, ICE 2018; plenary lecture). He also has reported regarding the pathophysiology and underlying mechanisms of hypophysitis including immune therapy-induced hypophysitis (EJE 2013, Pituitary 2015, 2019, J Endocri Soc 2018).

Baillargeon, Jean Patrice

Jean-Patrice Baillargeon, MD, MSc is board-certified in endocrinology and metabolism and professor of medicine at the Université de Sherbrooke.

Dr Baillargeon primary areas of expertise include reproductive endocrinology, polycystic ovary syndrome, obesity, health system improvement and biostatistics/epidemiology. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship on the metabolic aspects of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) under the supervision of Dr Nestler in 2003 and obtained a Master’s in Clinical research and Biostatistics from the Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond VA. He is director of the Reproductive Endocrinology clinic of the Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke (CHUS) and an active member of the Lifestyle Multidisciplinary Management Clinic of the CHUS.

Dr Baillargeon has founded with researchers, patient representatives, health professionals, health care administrators and policy-makers the Canadian network on reproductive and maternal health of women with obesity and infertility. With support of this network, he recently completed a CIHR-funded, randomized-controlled trial (RCT) assessing in Sherbrooke the Fit-For-Fertility program, a transferable, interdisciplinary lifestyle intervention for women with obesity that is integrated to the fertility clinic. Following the success of this trial, Dr Baillargeon obtained in 2018 a CIHR Project grant to assess the benefits of the Fit-For-Fertility program in seven clinics throughout Canada with a multicenter RCT.

Dr Baillargeon received a Young Investigator Award from the Canadian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism and is actually the President of this Society.

ICE 2020 - Vivien Lim MD

Lim, Vivien

Vivien Lim graduated from the National University of Singapore Medical School. Subsequently, she gained both an MRCP (UK) and a Masters in Internal Medicine in Singapore and embarked on endocrinology training in Singapore for which she was accredited as a Specialist in Endocrinology. After specialising in Endocrinology, she had worked as a consultant in a government hospital where she held the post of programme director of the endocrine residency programme and had been appointed as a Senior Lecturer to the National University of Singapore, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. She works currently in the Gleneagles Medical Centre in Singapore.

She held the post of the President of the Endocrine Metabolic Society of Singapore from 2016 to 2018, Hon Secretary of the Osteoporosis Society of Singapore (OSS)  in 2016-2018 and currently sits in the executive committee. She had also been the Peer Coordinator of Doctors Without Borders (Medicins Sans Frontieres) in Singapore. She will be the Chair of ICE 2022 in Singapore.

Timothy J Cole

J Cole, Timothy

Associate Professor Cole holds an academic position at the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Monash University in Melbourne, where he is currently the Academic Deputy Head of Department. He leads a Research Group in the Stem Cells and Development theme of the Biomedicine Discovery Institute at Monash. His research program investigates endocrine systems and cell signalling pathways important for mammalian development and function. He is currently President of the Endocrine Society of Australia, a member of the The Endocrine Society (USA), the British Endocrine Society and currently holds positions on the Editorial Board (Endocrinology) of Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing. UK) and the Journal of Endocrinology/Journal of Molecular Endocrinology (Bioscientifica, UK). Associate Professor Cole’s main research interests are the developmental roles of the adrenal steroid hormones that act through intracellular nuclear receptors, particularly related to respiratory development, renal function and metabolic disease. Other research interests include steroid modifying enzymes and the development of novel synthetic steroid drugs to treat a range of inflammatory, respiratory and metabolic diseases.

John Newell-Price

Newell Price, John

John Newell-Price is Professor of Endocrinology at the University of Sheffield. He qualified in medicine at the University of Cambridge, and undertook his clinical endocrine specialist training at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, where he was also a Medical Research Council Training Fellow for his PhD.

Since 2000, he has been at the University of Sheffield, and a Consultant Endocrinologist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust where he is the Clinical Lead for Endocrinology, Chairs the MDTs, and is Lead for the Sheffield ENETS European Centre of Excellence for Neuroendocrine Tumours. He has set up and co-runs the joint gamma knife radiosurgery service for pituitary tumours at the National Radiosurgery Centre in Sheffield.

His research interests include glucocorticoids, pituitary and neuroendocrine tumours, and has published widely in these areas.

He is Senior Editor of the journal ‘Clinical Endocrinology’ and has served on the Editorial Board of ‘Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism’, and on task forces for clinical guidelines authored on Cushing’s syndrome (2008 and 2015) for the Endocrine Society and Adrenal Incidentaloma (2016) for the European Society for Endocrinology.  He chaired The Royal College of Physicians, UK Joint Specialist Committee for Diabetes and Endocrinology (2012-2016) and is NIHR Research Lead for the Clinical Reference Group for Specialist Endocrinology NHS England, Chair (President) of the UK and Ireland Neuroendocrine Tumour Society, and serves on the Society for Endocrinology Clinical Committee. He was the Chair of the Endocrine Society’s 100th Annual Meeting, Chicago 2018, and is a member of the Governance Task Force.
